GTA 6 update as Rockstar confirms cutting Red Dead Online support

Rockstar has updated fans on the state of Grand Theft Auto VI‘s development while announcing that Red Dead Online will stop receiving any major content updates.

The game developer explained in a blog post: “Over the past few years, we have been steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series — understanding more than ever the need to exceed players’ expectations and for this next entry to be the best it can possibly be.”

Obviously, that has come at a cost, and that cost is the online component of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Fans had already complained that the online was less Red Dead and more Dead and had actually planned an in-game funeral for the service on July 13, a year to the day since the last substantial bit of new content.

Perhaps in response to fans considering Red Dead Online over, Rockstar has officially confirmed that’s the case.

“Alongside seasonal special events and experience improvements — plus other changes to enhance and maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment — we plan to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years,” the blog post continued.

“We will continue to highlight and share the creative efforts of our Red Dead community at every opportunity via the Newswire and beyond.”

So the online isn’t being shut down, but the only support it will get are bug fixes, small events and promotions. No wrapping up of certain storylines, no requested features like online lobbies or a creator mode, or commitment to stop rampant cheating on the PC version. Suffice to say, the in-game funeral is still going ahead.

Following the launch of Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles, Rockstar has also announced a slew of updates to GTA Online: expansions to criminal careers, nerfing homing missiles and the Oppressor Mk II, increasing to GTA$ payouts, community challenges and other improvements and updates.
